Electric Vehicle Charging Points

Concerns about the environment and high oil prices mean millions of us are considering an electric vehicle. Of course, if you’re getting an electric vehicle (EV), you’ll need somewhere to charge it

Why would I need an EV charger on my property?

An EV charger is essential if you want to charge your vehicle from home, or encourage electronic vehicle ownership at your work premises.
Having an EV charging station on commercial premises also offers a unique way to bring attention to your business for electronic car owners. Some EV charging networks even offer a kickback to property owners that allow public charging at their site.

The different types of EV Charging Point

There are three main types of EV charging point: rapid, fast and slow. They pretty much do exactly what they say on the tin.

Fast chargers are the standard for home and workplace charging and enable people to charge their vehicles within a few hours, depending on the vehicle and rating of the charging point. The most common fast charger we install is rated at 7kW, which will charge most vehicles from 0-100% within 6-12 hours.

Slow chargers (or trickle chargers)  They usually use a normal 13A plug socket and are not intended to be used day in and day out because they may overload the sockets in your house.

Can I install an EV charger on my property?

Installing an EV charger yourself is not recommended. A certified electrician can assess your home or office electrical system to determine the right type of EV charging station for you. Some EV charging stations will also void their warranty if they are not installed by a certified electrician.

If you are looking to have an EV charger installation at your residence you must meet the following requirements:

  • You own the property, or have permission from the property owner
  • You have your own off-street parking spot
  • You have access to a home wi-fi network

You may also be able to take advantage of several grant schemes aimed at reducing the cost of charging infrastructure installation for both homes and workplaces offered by the government to support the wider use of electric and hybrid vehicles.
